Welcome to the Senior Artists Alliance

This is the web site for the Senior Artists Alliance and our art.
It provides current information to our membership of 130+ senior artists.
Our members reside primarily in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC.

We have general meetings for the membership and guests, usually monthly, where a local artist, college professor, or member gives a presentation.  Future scheduled meetings are described below;
for past meetings click the navigation bar tab above.
Please join us as our guest.

As some of you know, Paul Pincus was rear-ended in Florida and spent two days in the hospital.  I talked to him the other day, and he is coming along ok, but misses SAA and his Sculpture class at MC.   I know he would like hearing from the members.

Please drop him a line at ppincus@comcast.net or 1-561-429-8961.

MEMBER ACTIVITIES

                                                        What's Happening .. and happened??

In September, Cookie Kerxton's exhibit, called "Courage Unmasked," debuted before more than 500 people at a fundraiser and live auction at the Katzen Arts Center at American University. The roughly 40 masks still for sale were exhibited at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center community store in Silver Spring.

The proceeds from all art sales go toward 9114HNC, a foundation Kerxton began that benefits patients of head and neck cancer and has already raised $29,000. The money is much deserved for patients of a disease that doesn't receive the donations or the publicity of more common cancers but typically affects low-income or elderly people, Kerxton said.

Les Grinspoon sold his phototgraph, "Venetian Apartment", at the Edison Gallery exhibit. He also got a first place for his photograph, Walk on the Canal, at the Chevy Chase Women's Club exhibit.

Neil Willens sold eight photographs at the Georgetown University Hospital art gallery during April. He will be exhibiting there again in April 2011.

Sculpture Dedication at Strathmore Music Center

Murray Stein’s musical sculpture, Schubert’s Trout Quintet, was dedicated on June 15, 2010, 11:00 am, in a ceremony at the Strathmore Music Center on Rockville Pike.

Murray likes working with a wood laminate called Parallam, made of tulip poplar, perfect for the skeletal elements of the instruments.. The strings are thin dowels.  The keyboard employs segmented turning, using tiger maple and gaboon ebony.  Ironically, the string instruments are the ones usually made of tiger maple.  Stein made the keyboard as a cylindrical bottomless bowl , cut it into quarters, then reassembled the pieces as a sine wave, so it can weave over and under the elements of  the cello and double bass.

The violin and viola overlap so as to form the outline of a fish, i.e., the Trout.   This outline is emphasized with dichroic glass, so the vivid colors form in fact, a rainbow trout.

Congratulations from Senator Forehand

Regina Price will be exhibiting at Rockville's Glenview Mansion, month of July, in the Conference Rooms. Reception to be announced. Contact hbrep@aol.com if you have questions

 From Irma Spencer...

Two of my outdoor pieces are spending  five months leased to the city of Rockville.  My "Penguin of Summer" can be seen in the Rockville Town Center plaza, under a tree, surveying his strange warming environment and watching children play in the fountain.  He will reside there until November.
The Rockville Park, home of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre and the Glenview Mansion, has 6 sculptures on its grounds. My painted yellow round piece, "Happy Daze" is on the grass facing the entrance road. To go there, take Wootton Parkway across RV Pike, turn right at light on Baltimore Ave, and left on Edmonston to the entrance.

Phyllis Levy has returned from wintering in Florida and reports...

"For several years now I have been spending the winters in Delray Beach, FL.  Many people think of this area as a cultural desert. I used to think that, too, before I learned better.  I now know that is far from the truth.  Delray Beach is halfway between West Palm Beach and Miami and this past winter there was a great deal of art to look at in the area.

Delray Beach has a Japanese museum that is a delight.  It is called "The Morikami Museum and Garden.  The gardens are a pleasure to walk through and the museum, though small,  always has interesting exhibits.  This past winter there was an exhibit of the sculpture of Jun Kaneko (click to see a video of Jun Kaneko at work) which was very unusual.  Mr. Kaneko was born in Nagoya, Japan, of Korean descent.  He now lives and works in Omaha.  His pieces are constructed of clay and are very large.  I had never seen them before and I was very taken with the powerful yet simple images he creates.  The pieces are done using the slab method for the shapes which are glazed after firing. Some of the works are huge, simple heads.  He also does abstract pieces called Dangos that are large, simple forms that are very striking.  I was so taken with these unusual works of sculpture that I returned several times to look again".

(Webmaster's note. This museum and gardens evolved from Japanese settlement in the area approximately 100 years ago.  Spend a few minutes and look at these web sites which are just a few of many available).
